Sugar. If its too sweet going down, if you can reasonably say "I can't taste the booze", then you will pay for it in the morning.

It's why fruity cocktails, _and Coke, etc. all will bust your skull in the morning. This is why I avoid whites at all costs, and drink liquor neat.

By the way, the best hangover cure that doesn't involve a bloody mary is the following:
2 big glasses of water.
2 aspirin.
1 multivitamin
2 B-12
strong coffee...

Another source of "the" wine headache could be the substantially higher alcohol levels found in most wines todayn versus those of 12 to 15 years ago. Reds as high as 15-16 percent on a regular basis and whites sometime as high as 14 percent.
