Nectar Restaurant -- note for Cincy readers

The Sweet Partner in Crime and I went for a birthday celebratory dinner at Nectar, a very nice restaurant on Mt. Lookout Square. After our meal, this place rocketed into the top three or four places we've eaten in town since we've moved here. Julie Francis' place treated us extremely well. Their oft-changing seasonal menu is largely created from locally grown and/or organic ingredients.

For appetizers, we had their sautéed fresh calamari and their charcuterie (FoodSpeak for "bunch of various fresh meat items") plate, which included prosciutto, organic chicken liver mousse, homeade pickles, and whole grain mustard. The range of flavors was absolutely fantastic. We did hanger steak and duck for entrees. When perfectly done duck is the "least good" thing you've got in front of you -- it's a happy time.

Why include this particular restaurant recommendation? (Besides, of course, that we were ecstatic about the quality of the food?) The wine list was very affordable. Nothing under $15, of course, but you expect that kind of markup when you go out to dinner. You're not going to find any $200 bottles of wine on the list there, but you really don't need to. The wines are all basic, simple, affordable and complement the food wonderfully. Our server did us the favor of letting us interview a couple of wines before our entrees came out.

If you're local or coming to town -- do check them out. It's well worth your dinner (or brunch) dollar.
